Cold Weather Exercises - Safety First For The Diabetic

Even with the best of intentions, many people just lack the motivation to carry on with their outdoor exercise program during the cold months of the winter. Although, dropping your program just isn't a very good idea for your own health and safety, curling up beside a roaring fire with a snuggly blanket and a cup of hot cocoa just seems to be more becoming to the imagination.

But a consistent exercise program has numerous benefits to prevent several future possible diabetic complications. Several of the main advantages are:
helps to reduce the rise in your blood sugar levels when testing (or not testing) on that glucose meterit is an effective weight loss and appetite control strategyrelieves much of the muscle and joint pain common to diabetes allowing the continuous flow of oxygenated blood to pass smoothly to all the body's extremities

Staying Safe During The Winter Workout

If the idea of the treadmill in front of the television or the local gym's numerous classes is just not your idea of the ideal exercise program, with some careful pre-planning to ensure your safety, you can still follow an effective but improved daily workout regimen.
pile on the layers of clothing - As your body temperature heats up during the routine, shed one or two pieces by easily removing them and tie them around your waist or neck.
avoid dark clothing unless you wear reflective arm, leg or chest bands during the early morning or late afternoon/evening hours. Always help yourself by ensuring your easy visibility with any passing drivers.
wear appropriate footwear for the current weather conditions. Good fitting sneakers with excellent traction is a necessity during icy and snowy weather.
warm up your body itself before venturing outside. Try taking a warm/hot shower or drink a cup of hot broth-based soup. The digestive process itself actually fuels your energy reserves during your workout.
do not forget to carry along a source of fresh water even in cold weather exercise. The excess perspiration as you workout and the extra heavy breathing in cold weather both add up to an increased loss of bodily fluids, thus an increased risk of dehydration.

If all else fails and the weather is just too nasty for a day or two outside, waiting for another bright sunny day can be achieved by falling back on the treadmill and TV just until mother nature offers up another beautiful, crisp winter day.

Diabetic Test Strips, Five Things to Know Before You Buy

Diabetic test strips have come a long way since the urine tests diabetics used to rely on for home testing. And there are some things you really should know before you decide which glucose monitor to buy. When you get them home, it's important to treat them right so they will give you accurate readings. Here's a list of five things that will help you choose and use your diabetic test strips.

Number One - What Will They Cost

Looking for a good glucose monitor is only half of the research you need to do before you settle on the meter that fits your needs. Even if you find a free monitor, it is a one-time purchase, but the diabetic test strips will be a monthly expense for as long as you have that brand of monitor.

Medicare and Medicaid will pay for your monitor and test strips because they are considered durable medical equipment. That separates them from your prescription needs (like insulin and needles). Make sure yours are covered, and you can pick from the choices available from your DME provider.

But if you are buying the strips yourself it's good to know where you can get them for the lowest possible price. Go to Amazon.com and compare their prices on diabetic test strips with the ones you'll find at a discount store. The Amazon prices are generally half as much as store costs for the same brands.

By the way, it's simple to check prices at stores that have a website. That kind of knowledge arms you with the information you need to pick the best diabetic test strips as well as the best glucose monitor. It also helps you decide where to get them. Remember to read the small print when you buy online, because shipping prices will often add a lot to the price.

Number Two - Check the Expiration Date

Your meter readings can be made useless if your test strips are out of date. Always check the dates when you receive them in the mail or buy them at the store. Expiration dates are printed clearly on every vial and disc. Send them back if they are old.

Make sure to use up your old strips first when you get a new batch so you don't accidentally save some until they are out of date. It's common sense, but it's easy to ignore little details like that when you're in a hurry or distracted.

If you're a type 2 diabetic who only tests once a day, and you buy in bulk, watch your expiration dates closely. Buy the strips that have the date farthest away so you won't have to worry about it.

Number Three - Don't Forget Coding

A lot of diabetic meters need to be coded for each new batch or vial. Many newer monitors don't need to be coded, so if you like that, look for the words "no coding" when you're shopping for a new glucose meter. Getting a monitor that does not need to be coded means one less thing to remember.

If your monitor needs coding, a number shows up every time you put a test strip into it. Make sure that number matches the one on your vial or package. Skipping this step when you open a new vial of test strips will make your blood sugar readings unreliable.

Number Four - Protect Your Diabetic Test Strips

Moisture, humidity and heat will make the strips unusable. They come to you in sealed vials or packs, and you can store them the same way. Never leave them open to the air. Also, store them at room temperature, not in the refrigerator. If they are kept too cold or too near a heat source they won't be accurate anymore.

Wash your hands before you touch them, and make sure alcohol doesn't get on them either. Alcohol will contaminate the test strip, and so will dust and dirt. Clean hands that are not wet from water or alcohol are all that should ever touch them.

Number Five - Know How to Use Your Diabetic Test Strips

Test strip discs need to be seated in the monitor correctly or they won't work. And single strips need to be inserted all the way before they will turn on the meter. Bent strips are useless. And add the amount of blood that's needed. Too little and the test will not run. Get too much blood smeared on the strip and it will give you an error message.

If you have trouble using your test strips, ask the nurse at your doctor's office to demonstrate ways around your difficulties. They deal with diabetic testing all the time, and they know what they're doing.

Type 2 diabetic symptoms like peripheral neuropathy can make working with test strips harder because you've lost sensitivity in your fingertips. Keep the vial and meter on a clean surface so if you drop the strips you won't have to throw them away.

Speaking of type 2 diabetic symptoms, if you use your test strips more than once a day, you'll likely have better control of your blood sugar, and that leads to better outcomes with all diabetes complications.

Continuous glucose monitors have not yet been perfected. And those monitors that don't need a drop of blood to read your glucose numbers are not available to us yet. So you have to use test strips. Take good care of them, and take good care of your health.

Diabetic Nephropathy - Diagnosis, Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Diabetic nephropathy is a kidney disease that is caused by diabetes. You may be diabetic nephropathy when there is much inflammation, glucose, and also acid waste in the bloodstream so that the small capillaries feeding into the kidneys will be clogged. The accumulation of acid waste will ultimately damage kidney cells.

When the kidney cells are damaged or die, you will have a higher risk of kidney failure. The kidneys will get deteriorated faster if you keep eating unhealthy foods such as conventional animal meat or other highly processed foods, drink alcohol, and also smoke cigarettes. Diabetic nephropathy is in fact the most common cause end-stage kidney disease and chronic kidney failure in the U.S.

1. Symptoms

Patients of both diabetes type 1 and 2 are at risk of diabetic nephropathy. Unfortunately, there are no symptoms in the early stage of the condition but eventually kidney function will start declining. Later, there may be symptoms such as the following:

- Fatigue

- Frequent hiccups

- Poor appetite

- General ill feeling

- Foaming urine

- Nausea and vomiting

- Weight gain (unintentional)

- Headache

- Swelling of the legs

- Swelling around the eyes (occurs in the mornings)

2. Diagnosis

To be able to find out whether you are diabetic nephropathy or not, you can take a test which checks for the albumin or protein in the urine, since in a normal condition urine does not contain protein. Protein may appear in the urine 5 to 10 years prior to the development of other symptoms.

When you are type 1 diabetic, it is recommended to perform a urine test yearly after you are living with the condition for 5 years. When you are type 2 diabetic, immediately perform yearly urine test after being diagnosed. If any doubt occurs in the diagnosis, a biopsy is usually performed.

3. Treatment

You can avoid worse kidney disease and stay away from its complications by lowering high blood pressure or hypertension. Your doctor may prescribe you some medications for this, such as ACE inhibitors and ARBs.

However, please remember that drugs will not give long-term results!

Don't be dependent on drugs. You should consume healthy foods that can help with diabetic nephropathy, such as more vegetables and get your source of protein from chicken, instead of red meat. For those with kidney problems, research has shown that chicken is a better alternative. You should also do regular physical activity.

4. Prevention

Preventing is better than treating. To be able to do this, you can have a plant-based diet, such as raw salads and raw vegetable juices. When you are type 1 or type 2 diabetic, do an annual checkup with your doctor. Also, remember to regularly control your blood pressure.

For kidney health, stay away from highly processed foods and include more green vegetables in your diet like kale and spinach. Don't forget to get the useful omega-3 from fish like wild salmon and sardines.

Diabetic Travel, How To Be Prepared To Have A Good Trip

Diabetic travel takes extra preparation. It's important to plan ahead especially if you aren't used to traveling, because you'll be out of your home comfort zone. In this article there's a diabetes checklist you can use that's made for type 2 diabetics.

Before You Start Packing

The first question to ask yourself is how long you will be gone from home. Never pack just enough medication for those days. If you are traveling by car you will need enough medications to last an extra day or two, and if your diabetic travel includes plane rides the rule of thumb is enough for three extra days.

That means you may need to talk with your doctor about getting extra insulin and supplies. While you are at his office, get written prescriptions to carry with you, and let your doctor know where you're going. It's a great idea to get up to date blood tests done and even a physical if it's getting close to time for one.

For plane trips, a doctor's note about your diabetic condition and any special needs is a great thing to have in the case with your bottles and equipment. And if your diabetic travel is to another country, your doctor will supply you with anti-diarrheals and antibiotics to carry along as well.

Check the expiration dates on medications and test strips to make sure they won't expire while you're away from home. Buy extra batteries for your monitor and insulin pump if you have one, and it would be a good idea to have a backup glucose monitor to carry in a separate bag just in case the other one gets lost or broken.

If you are going to a non-English speaking country, learn the words for diabetes, insulin and phrases you might need, for instance "I need juice." And make sure you have your diabetic jewelry that states "Diabetic" clearly on it.

Diabetic Travel Emergency Kit

Assemble a diabetic travel emergency kit. It should include glucose tablets, an anti-diarrheal and the laxative you usually use because traveling tends to make some of us constipated, and foods we aren't used to can cause diarrhea.

The kit should contain a fever reducer like Tylenol and a pain reliever like aspirin or ibuprofen. A diabetic cough medication and an antihistamine (which makes a pretty good aid against motion sickness) should be included.

Put in a tube of antibacterial, a roll of gauze and tape for blisters and cuts, an antifungal (and yeast infection treatment for women), alcohol or Betadine, and insect repellent. Add the medications you got from your doctor as well.

Get a strong, insulated diabetic travel pack for your insulin and other supplies. Some packs have temperature controls in them. Remember, your insulin doesn't have to be refrigerated but it can't get too hot or freeze either.

What To Pack for Diabetic Travel

Here's a good diabetes checklist for you.

Pack more syringes and test strips than you will need. And pack an extra monitor and batteries.Pack your medical information list and include contact information for your doctors and family emergency numbers.Put your prescriptions and doctor's notes in your diabetic travel pack with the insulin and equipment you'll need, and keep them as carry on luggage if you fly, or stow them close to where you'll be in the car.Pack plenty of healthy diabetic travel snacks.Pack diabetic shoes for walking and extra pairs of thick diabetic socks because you are probably going to walk a lot.Don't forget to pack sun block, hat and sunglasses.Pack your emergency kit.

While You Are Traveling

Set your watch alarm so you'll eat at the proper times, regardless of time zones and itineraries. And you'll need to watch for the time zone changes so you won't overdose or take diabetes medications later than you are supposed to.

If you're on a road trip you should not be the designated driver unless you are confident about your blood sugar control and your insulin supplies. Driving adds to stress, and that can affect your blood sugar levels.

Take your blood glucose levels often, especially after you land from a plane flight, because jet lag can mask blood sugar lows even in a type 2 diabetic. And during a long flight move around often to stave off blood clots. Be aware that injecting insulin on a flight can be difficult because cabin pressure sometimes affects the ability to draw up insulin. Take it slow.

While you are traveling be sure to check your feet every day. Don't go barefoot. If you go hiking wear double thickness socks and good shoes. And never hike alone.

Diabetic travel takes extra planning and thought, but it's possible. So get out and enjoy yourself. Just make sure you take care of your type 2 diabetic needs, and you'll do fine even far from home.

Hemorrhoids - A Diabetic Dilemma

Although many diabetics do state they are prone to hemorrhoids on an occasional basis, this condition has more to do with the types of foods you eat and your current lifestyle than it does with diabetes. A diet high in processed foods, low bodily fluids (mild dehydration) and constant sitting, whether from work or pleasure, these all lead to trouble as the final result.

You can be a perfectly healthy individual anywhere in your 20's to 50's and still run into a bout of hemorrhoids occasionally. The key here to avoidance is Prevention. Change up your daily lifestyle by adding a few simple steps including moderate exercise and a few dietary changes and the ultimate reward will be no more painful unpleasant outbreaks of hemorrhoids.
Fiber Up! - preferably with fiber directly from nature. Fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grain products need to be a major portion of your daily diet. Supplement these only if more is needed with any of the many sources of supplements, powders and pre-mixed drinks found at many health food or local drug stores.
Another good option is to buy fresh flax seeds and grind them as needed, (stored ground flax seed loses its healthy qualities over time and tends to turn rancid rapidly). Always store the seeds in the refrigerator though. Any shelf-stable ground flax is full of chemical preservatives to keep it shelf stable. By ingesting this chemical cocktail you are negating all of your purpose at attempting a healthier lifestyle.
Low impact exercise (such as walking) for a minimum 10 minute period daily helps to keep your stool soft and moist (it speeds up the rate of flow which foods travel through your digestive tract) thus promoting quicker and easier elimination
Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. This not only aids every other body organ, it also manages to ease elimination by keeping your stool flowing fast and smooth.
Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine in most blends of coffee and teas, both regular and decaffeinated, most alcohols and excessive strong types of spice blends (hot peppers and cayenne peppers). Continuous digestion of all of these leads to dehydration and a build-up of inflammation in your body which aggravates the external skin tissues.
Desk jobs or couch potatoes need to learn to get up and move at least 3 to 5 minutes every hour. Prolonged sitting creates continuous pressure which is detrimental to the sensitive nerves and tissues, thus enabling hemorrhoids to develop and enlarge
Chill out! - or at least learn how to manage your stress levels daily. If you are a type A aggressive personality, all that self-imposed pressure upsets your digestive system by aggravating your nervous system, the control center for good digestion in the human body.

The Road To Recovery

But sometimes it's just too late for prevention and relief is all that's being sought instead. So start by trying a few of these natural therapies instead to jumpstart some much needed relief.
After every bowel movement plus up to 5 more times daily, wash the area down and then apply a "bath" of witch hazel with a cotton ball or tissue. This is an astringent which means it is going to burn and smart some on this sensitive skin but it does rapidly promote healing, thus relief.
For extreme cases, between cleansing sessions apply a thin film of aloe vera gel to further aid in healing and quieting the itch. Hydrocortisone creme or calendula cream can also be used in place of the aloe vera.
Take a warm bath or apply warm compresses to the area for at least 10 minutes every few hours. The warmth promotes the flow of blood and oxygen to the area which promotes faster healing.
For severe cases, check with your local health food store for an ayurvedic treatment gel known as Triphola. This remedy helps to tone and condition your lower GI tract which aids in better elimination, thus lessening your chances of hemorrhoids.
Two other herbs with sustained history of good relief for many people include Butcher's Broom (tightens the weakened blood vessels) and Horse Chestnut (this tones and tightens the weakened, distended veins and tissues.
Standard ibuprofen (Motrin and Advil etc) can be used, as directed on the bottle, for short-term pain and swelling relief while you are waiting for nature's remedies to offer your body some relief.

So, a few simple changes starting now in your daily diet and daily routine is all it takes to ward off any of the nasty sounding after-effects common with this inconvenient diabetic complication.

diabetic diet

Diabetes is the most important chronic problem which is directly related to your dietary / eating habits and calorie consumption. Accordingly, you can take good care of yourself and your diabetes by learning:What to eat How much to eat When to eat Hence, the term “diabetes diet” is all about making wise food choices that can help you feel good every day, lose weight if you need and lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, and other problems caused by diabetes.

The recommended daily calorie intake of a diabetic dietAccording to the most dieticians and nutritionists, you should ideally take 1,200 to 1,600 calories a day. Your daily diabetic diet plan should also be based on your receiving 50 to 60 percent of the daily calories from carbohydrates, 15 percent from proteins, and the remainder as fats.

Benefits of a diabetic dietAt the first place, healthy eating helps keep your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, in your target range. In diabetes, the real culprit is high blood glucose levels and hence, by following the recommended diabetic diet, you can help prevent various health problems and complications such as blindness, stroke, kidney failure, heart failure and gangrene.

Components of diabetic dietStarches: Starches are bread, grains, cereal, pasta, and starchy vegetables like corn and potatoes. They provide carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Whole grain starches are healthier because they have more vitamins, minerals, and fiber. You should eat some starches at each meal. Eating starches is healthy for everyone, including people with diabetes. However, you should buy whole grain breads and cereals. Also eat fewer fried and high-fat starches such as regular tortilla chips and potato chips, French fries, pastries, or biscuits. Try pretzels, fat-free popcorn, baked tortilla chips or potato chips, baked potatoes, or low-fat muffins. Use mustard instead of mayonnaise on a sandwich. Similarly, eat cereal with fat-free (skim) or low-fat (1%) milk.

Vegetables: This is, perhaps, one of the most important components of a typical diabetic diet as vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber and they are low in carbohydrate glucose. However, not all vegetables are that good for diabetics. You should go for green leafy vegetables that contain high amount of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Also, you should go for raw and cooked vegetables with little or no fat, sauces, or dressings. Try low-fat or fat-free salad dressing on raw vegetables or salads. Steam vegetables using water or low-fat broth can also be consumed. If you do use a small amount of fat, use canola oil, olive oil, or soft margarines (liquid or tub types) instead of fat from meat, butter, or shortening.

Fruits: Fruits are a rich source of energy, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Contrary to the popular beliefs, a diabetic diet does not stop you from eating sweet fruits. Instead, it just asks you to be more cautious in your selection. In a diabetic diet, you can eat fruits raw or cooked, as juice with no sugar added, canned in their own juice, or dried. You should buy smaller pieces of fruit and choose pieces of fruit more often than fruit juice. Remember, whole fruit is more filling and has more fiber. You should also save high-sugar and high-fat fruit desserts such as peach cobbler or cherry pie for special occasions.

Meat & meat products: The meat and meat products include poultry, eggs, cheese, fish, and tofu. In diabetic diet, you should eat only a small amount of some of these foods each day. Meat and meat substitutes provide protein, vitamins, and minerals but may also have high fat content. Therefore white meat (poultry / fish) is usually preferable. However, if you are taste-conscious, you can also choose modest amounts of leaner meat. In addition, adapting the following measures for meat related foods can help you greatly.Buy cuts of beef, pork, ham, and lamb that have only a little fat on them. Trim off the extra fat. Eat chicken or turkey without the skin. Cook meat and meat substitutes in low-fat ways such as broil, grill, stir-fry, roast , steam, microwave Limit the amount of nuts, peanut butter, and fried foods you eat. They are high in fat.

Fats and Sweets: You should restrict the amount of fats and sweets you eat. Fats and sweets are not as nutritious as other foods. Fats also have a lot of calories. Sweets can be high in carbohydrate and fat. Some contain saturated fats, Trans-fats, and cholesterol that increase your risk of heart disease. Limiting these foods will help you lose weight and keep your blood glucose and blood fats under control. As for sugar, non-nutritive sweeteners (like aspartame, acesulfame, saccharin) are preferable to both sucrose (table sugar) and fructose (fruit sugar) in drinks, cereals, puddings, and other foods. This is especially true for overweight diabetics.

Alcoholic beverages: Alcoholic drinks have calories but no nutrients. If you have alcoholic drinks on an empty stomach, they can make your blood glucose level go too low. Alcoholic drinks also can raise your blood fats. It is, therefore, best to avoid alcohol altogether.

Salt (Sodium): Most people with diabetes eat more salt than they need. Salt can raise blood pressure, which increases the chances for heart disease or stroke. Remember, you need less than 1,000 milligrams of sodium per 1,000 calories, and should not consume more than 3,000 milligrams of sodium per day. Accordingly, a diabetic diet is a low-salt diet. Use less salt when cooking and at the table. One-half teaspoon is equal to about 1,000 milligrams of sodium. Limit foods that are high in sodium, such as processed meats, cheeses, condiments, chips, fast foods, convenience meals, crackers, and salted nuts. Read labels for sodium (NaCl) content

Last but not least, if you have diabetes and you are overweight, you should also start losing weight to lessen the risk of complications that becomes even greater when diabetes is associated with obesity. Remember, high blood sugar levels make you feel hungrier than normal. Proactol Plus is a potent herbal supplement that works naturally to suppress your appetite partially (not completely) so that you can still eat just the right amount of foods from your diabetic diet. Weight loss with the help of diabetic diet, Proactol Plus and healthy exercise reduces the risk of developing diabetes and returns many Type II diabetics to normal blood-sugar regulation. Studies have shown that losing even as little as 10 extra pounds can make a difference in your blood glucose, cholesterol, and fat levels in diabetes.

Essential Meals and Foods to Avoid (with a Diabetic Diet Plan)

Nowadays you simply do not find one specific diabetic diet plan designed for people with diabetes; but it is possible to learn about some general recommendations for the best diabetic foods to include on a diet. Naturally which means once you discover diabetic foods meal choices can be based on each individual and their specific health requirements. You will find a great deal of advice, help and suggestions available that can show you which foods are going to be the best and worst choices for those with diabetes.

At some point and time most individuals become confused in light of the fact there are so many different options to consider. This leads to difficulties when someone is attempting to decide which foods on the diabetic diet plan should be included in their diet.

Therefore, rather than being focused on the foodstuff which a person suffering from diabetes should eat, the major reason for penning this article is to point out examples of the foodstuff which is not beneficial to a diabetic person.

In simple terms, a low glycemic diet which happens to be reduced in unhealthy fats, consist of glucose free products, frequent exercise and also the maintaining of blood sugar levels are generally suggested.

In an effort to preserve ideal blood sugar levels, your meals for diabetics needs to be healthy and balanced along with the proper amount of necessary protein, fats, fruits and carbohydrates.

The meals containing carbs are also going to offer selections such as fresh fruits, glucose, fresh vegetables, along with whole grains like rice and wheat. It takes longer for healthy proteins and complex to be digested and for this reason these food groups will affect the circulating blood glucose level more slowly.

For example, food items containing fat, for instance soft serve ice cream will heighten the glucose level significantly slower compared to potatoes.

It is imperative that a person with diabetes should avoid the overly processed carbohydrates found in most packaged foods. This includes junk food, white flour bread and other products made with white flour. These are foods that have high glycemic index values that will result in elevated blood glucose readings.

Another smart choice is to avoid many of those cakes and pastries that are advertised as being ‘sugar-free’, and are marketed for diabetics. Even though the glucose may have been eliminated most of these products have excessive amounts of fats, when compared to the regular versions of the items that do contain sugar. These ‘sugar-free’ items often include unsaturated fats among their list of ingredients.

Furthermore, when buying the candies with low sugar these items should be analyzed for general carbs.

If you are drinking alcoholic beverages on an empty stomach this could end up causing problems with your blood sugar level, and this practice can also cause you to gain more body fat. Even milk can cause blood sugar levels to rise, even though most milk products do not have an overly sweet flavor. This elevation in blood sugar is caused by the lactose in milk. Lactose is simply another sugar that your metabolism converts into glucose.

One way to help stabilize your glucose level is by eating healthy diabetic foods with your meals that include items with fiber, vitamins and minerals. If you are uncertain how to construct meals for diabetics and make this diet work then you can always go to our website and find some helpful diabetes nutrition tips.

A healthy, diabetic diet plan that is suitable for any person with diabetes should maintain an optimum balance of glucose, salt, fiber and fat.

During this process you will begin to understand that no food item should be entirely forbidden when you are creating meals for diabetics; however there are some foods, especially those containing high levels of sugar, salt and fats that should only be consumed infrequently, and in smaller amounts.

Most of the suggestions that have been pointed out can help you prevent, or avoid, more serious health problems. So, take a little time to discover those unhealthy food items; eliminate them; and then construct your own low glycemic diet or tailor a personal diabetic diet plan. Having diabetes does not mean an individual has to turn to an extreme diet plan. The majority of diabetic cooking strategies center on the idea of producing smart choices, and creating a well-planned course of attack.

Usually, the real secret is situated with changing the kinds of foods that a diabetic person eats, as well as the having lifestyle, which often implies portion control as well as planned mealtimes.

There is certainly really no need for a new diabetic to follow the strict diet plan. In most cases, developing a diet which consists of high quantities of beneficial nutrients, can be low-calorie and also low-fat, is the best method that a diabetic may take. Besides food choices, another important factors that any kind of diabetic must take into account include regularly slated meals, as well as food that are portioned and stay near to the suggested serving size.

One particular approach to changing dieting is the concept of depending carbohydrates, which can be therapeutic for individuals taking blood insulin. Although keeping track of fat and proteins just isn’t as high a priority while counting carbs can be, individuals with diabetes ought to still carefully keep track of their consumption of equally fats and protein.

Sweets Consumption

Being diabetic does mean the end associated with sweets. Although a lot of people often worn diabetes sufferers to avoid sweets, most pros agree that the unexpected sweet does not harm. The main concern the following is in making sure that candy are consumed inside controlled amounts, and they do not upset the entire carbohydrate count its a day’s foods. Diabetic Diet Plan and the low Glycemic Index Diet

The low glycemic Index diet has been popular in America for a number of years this is because it works for weight loss and can be used in a diabetic diet plan. The vast number of Americans who suffer from diabetes (said to be around 23 million) could benefit from some form of weight management plan.

The Lower Glycemic Index Diet is good to use as the basis for a diabetic diet plan as it includes foods that are on the lower end of the glycemic index which means that your body has less sugars and carbs to regulate. If you wish to start a lower GI diet I suggest that you first speak with your physician and let them know your plans. I would say this even if you are just looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle and not just to help control your diabetes.

The benefits of a good diabetic diet plan are, in this case with the lower GI diet;

Carbohydrate balance.

You will find that sufferers of diabetes are often discouraged from starting a diet if it limits the amount of carbs. To me this seems wrong because most carbs will be turned into sugar. So surely you need to know how you have eaten. They do provide fuel for your body so the recommendation is for every adult to have 130 grams of carbs a day. Also a lot of vitamins and minerals are found in these carb rich foods.

You may be able to control your diabetes purely with a Glycemic Index Diet:

The majority of people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are as a result of obesity and these are the people who will benefit the most from this diabetic diet plan. They may even find they do not need any medical interventions once they are on this diet and it is working for them. This diet contains only foods that can be easily and safely processed by someone with diabetes. So this makes it easier to monitor your glycemic index. The quality of the foods included on the lower glycemic Index Diet; All of the foods that are allowed on the lower GI Diet are wholesome and healthy. There are lots of fresh fruit and vegetables in the diet, as well as whole grains and lean cuts of meat. This diet encourages you to eat healthily, and therefore help you lead a much healthier lifestyle. Another good point is the fact that you can still enjoy the occasional treat while on this diabetic diet plan. Helping to prevent other diseases; The Lower GI Diet can also help the body in the prevention of other diseases besides diabetes. Many people who are at risk of heart disease should look into starting a Lower GI Diet to help protect against this deadly disease. Research has found that a Lower Glycemic Index Diet is more effective than some other low carbs diets and also much more effective than the traditional low fat diet.

You should look at this diabetic diet plan more as a lifestyle change than just a lower GI diet. Diets always seem hard to stick to, you feel you are being restricted and not allowed to eat some things. Whereas lifestyle is about choice, you chose because of your health not to eat certain things. This way you will find it much easier to stick with it and sticking with this for the long term is what is needed. As mentioned before, seek medical advice from a physician you trust and can talk to, before starting this or any other diet. Especially if you have a large amount of weight to lose of you have already been diagnosed with diabetes. They can also help you track your weight loss and can be aware of the possible medical issues you may encounter while on this diet.

Foods to Avoid If You Are Diabetic

In diabetes, foods to avoid are those foods that aggravate the condition and cause either hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar spikes) or hypoglycemia (sharp decrease in blood sugar). Hypoglycemia is usually triggered by the diabetes treatments, not by the diabetic condition itself.

Diabetes patients who already are on a healthy diet need only modify some aspects of that diet. Diabetes patients, however, who are prone to eating unhealthy food, should consider revamping their whole diet routine. A physician along with a dietitian can compose a meal plan for diabetes patients.

A healthy diet for diabetics (and also for most healthy people) consists of 50-60% calories from carbohydrates, 20% from protein, and 30% or lower from fat. Of course, diabetic patients can eat foods that contain sugar, as long as it is in limited quantities, because sugar still provides calories convertible to energy that can be used by the body. Diabetic patients should have a daily cap of 60 grams of carbohydrates (2-5 choices), 1 choice of protein, and a limited amount of fat, as determined by an expert. However, diabetic patients should be careful not to add extra sugar to foods. That is the first thing to avoid - adding extra sugar.

All carbohydrates in foods are converted to glucose, which increases blood sugar. But all carbohydrates are not converted to glucose at the same rate. Some carbohydrates are converted slowly while others are converted more quickly. The measure at which carbohydrates in food are converted to glucose is called the glycemic index, or GI.

The lower the glycemic index of food, the slower the increase in blood glucose levels when that food is eaten. Foods with a glycemic index of 55 or less (low glycemic index) and with a glycemic index of 55-70 (intermediate glycemic index) are recommended most for diabetics. Foods that fall into this category are whole-grain cereals, whole-grain bread, pasta, and many fruits and vegetables. Foods with glycemic index above 70 or more (high glycemic index), like packaged cereals, candies, cakes, white bread, and sodas, should be avoided and replaced with foods with low and intermediate glycemic index to control blood glucose increase.

Additional foods to avoid include those that contain excessive amounts of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), or 'bad fats'. Fats count as one of the major risk factors in developing type II diabetes mellitus. In fact, some studies have shown that LDLs contribute to insulin resistance.

Fatty products to avoid include some portions of pork and chicken that contain plenty of fat. Some specialists even recommend removing all red meat from a diabetic's meal plan. Meat products with less fat, like beef and fish, are still allowed as long as they are cooked without additional fat. Instead of frying them, they could be baked, boiled, stewed, or steamed. Not all fats are bad, though; polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids are known to aid in decreasing insulin resistance; they can be found in fish oil, soy foods, and dark green leafy vegetables..

If you have diabetes, there are a lot of foods to avoid. But proper food selection can help you plan your diet without necessarily sacrificing taste and enjoyment.

Diabetic Friendly Energy Drinks - Hidden Health Dangers to Avoid

You might hope that "diabetic friendly energy drinks" would be safe for diabetics to use. In most cases, that would prove to be a false hope.

Most manufacturers of products claimed to be diabetic friendly choose to use artificial sweeteners to achieve sugar-free status. These provide no calories and have been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, so you might think they would be safe and effective. Again, in most instances you would be wrong on both counts.

Recent studies have shown that artificial sweeteners are neither safe nor effective. Let's deal with the "not effective" flaw first because that is really the most shocking piece of information.

Diet Beverages Cause Weight Gains

Scientific tests on humans and a variety of animals have shown repeatedly that artificial sweeteners in general cause weight gain and they spike insulin release -- two things that diabetics should be avoiding.(1)

Because the artificial sweetener industry makes substantial donations to the American Diabetic Association, the ADA is happy to recommend these dangerous substances to diabetics as a good way to "have your cake and eat it, too". (Always a message the public likes to hear!)

Most manufacturers of so-called diabetic friendly energy drinks are also eager to go along with the FDA and ADA recommendations because using artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium are cheaper than natural non-caloric sweeteners such as stevia and xylitol.

If the diabetic doesn't take the time to read the actual scientific reports about the proven dangers associated with artificial sweeteners -- and learn to carefully read product ingredient labels -- they won't know these things.

Neither the FDA nor the ADA are going to tell them, either, because they have conflicts of interests.

So, most diabetic friendly energy drinks don't fit the common definition of "effective" if they actually cause weight gain and cause even more insulin to be released into the diabetic's bloodstream, do they? This just makes the disease worse.

The health dangers found in each of these artificial sweeteners are different and would take too long to document in this article. I have included an article and a video as references that go into these increased risk factors in depth(1, 2).

Let's just mention two of the most attention-catching conditions that have been associated with use of these artificial sweeteners: Cancers and Neurological diseases such as ADD/ADHD, Depression, and lower IQ in babies whose mothers ingested these substances while they were pregnant.

The testimony of Dr. Russell Blaylock and Dr. Joseph Mercola about the dangers of aspartame and sucralose -- two of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners in energy drinks -- should be enough to convince any health-conscious diabetic that it is worth their time to read the labels of these beverages and take action to protect themselves.

My personal experience with all these synthetic sweeteners agrees with the findings of Drs. Mercola and Blaylock. As one who has diabetes on both sides of my family tree, I have long been careful to avoid using sugar -- and, for a time, I trusted that commercial products using various artificial sweeteners would be safe and effective as an alternative.

How Wrong I Was!

I experienced terribly painful dental problems caused by the regular use of a sucralose-sweetened sports drink five years ago. The pain went away as soon as I stopped drinking the beverage. I can't comment on the long-term neurological potential for damage predicted by Dr. Blaylock, but my teeth certainly recognized sucralose as "made from sugar" -- and at least as bad.

My experiences with aspartame were similar to the neurological symptoms described by Dr. Blaylock, a neurosurgeon and author. To compound the damage to one's nervous system, aspartame is also habit-forming. This addictive quality makes it hard for many who have used it to give it up.

Continued use of energy drinks containing these common artificial sweeteners are what is really concerning.

On the one hand, diabetics and those of us on the borderline have a physical need for safe sources of more energy.

On the other hand, the commercial and even the pharmaceutical products offered to us to fill the need are ineffective and a source of new, more dangerous health risks.
