Type 2 Diabetes - Easy Ways For Diabetics To Keep Their Body At A Healthy Weight!

Whether you are pre-diabetic or have been diagnosed with full-blown Type 2 diabetes, returning your body to a healthy weight and keeping it there, is crucial to help you live a long, healthy, happy life. No one wants to go through life feeling cruddy and not fitting into their clothes. Thankfully, there's a lot you can do each and every day to keep yourself living in a healthy body.

Here are some tips to get you started:

set goals that are realistic. You don't want to set such unobtainable goals you become frustrated. That just sets you up for failure.keep a record of everything you eat and drink. This will allow you to see patterns and know what you are doing wrong.cut out sugary drinks. You will be surprised at how much weight you can lose just by getting rid of sugary soft drinks, sweetened juices and sweet tea. These are just empty calories that you don't need.use smaller plates. When you eat off a smaller plate, you can fill it up and feel like you are going to eat a lot more food than you would be eating from a larger plate.dip your fork. Instead of putting dressing all over your salad, put it on the side and dip your fork in it before each bite. You will still get the taste, but with a lot fewer calories or kilojoules.slow down when you are eating. Savor the taste of your food. Don't watch TV or do anything else that will distract from enjoying each bite of your meal.never shop for groceries when you are hungry or tired.start each meal with a salad... how about a green salad with kidney beans and raw vegetables. You will feel full faster, but get more nutrients and fewer calories.don't eat in your car.choose lean proteins such as skinless chicken breast, and beans.eat vegetables at every meal.put your fork down between each bite of food. This will slow down your eating and allow you to really taste what you are eating. It also takes at least 20 minutes for your brain to get the message your stomach is comfortable and that you can stop eating.don't eat standing up, your brain and stomach are much more likely to register you are eating if you are relaxed and enjoying your meal.snack on raw fruits and veggies.use fruit for dessert... with a few chops of a knife, you can turn a few pieces of fruit into a beautiful fruit salad. Drizzle a little lemon or orange juice over the top to cover the fruit with it.drink at least 8 to 10 glass of water each day. Why not drink a glass of water before eating each meal.

Just following these simple rules will help you to lose weight and keep it off. Remember, it is a lifestyle change and not a diet. You should strive to live this way for life. Keeping a healthy body is critical to making sure that you live a longer life.

The only way to lose weight without medication or surgery is to take-in less energy (calories or kilojoules) than your body needs. There are no magic ingredients or food combinations to change this basic metabolic fact.

Oral Health and Diabetes - The Importance Of Having Healthy Teeth And Gums With Diabetes Type 2

It is important for people living with type 2 diabetes to pay attention to all aspects of their health and wellbeing.

Here is an aspect of taking care of yourself to live powerfully with type 2 diabetes. It is taking care of your oral health.

Recent studies have shown an increased risk between poor oral health and heart disease.

The risk for heart disease increases even more when you have poor oral health and type 2 diabetes.

This is because diabetes already puts you at twice the risk of heart disease than the general population. So when you add poor oral health to the mix you more than double your risk.

The mouth has thousands of different bacteria, fungi and viruses. Normally with proper oral hygiene and well-functioning salivary glands, these do not cause any problems.

However when the mouth becomes unhealthy due to poor oral health then a number of dental problems can set in.

The most common teeth and gum problems associated with type 2 diabetes are:

tooth decaygum diseasealtered tastefungal infections commonly called oral thrushdry mouthinfections

Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to tooth decay and gum disease

When blood sugar levels are not well controlled, this leads to hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia can cause bacteria and fungi to thrive in the saliva. This leads to the development of plaque.

Plaque is a hard material that builds up in the mouth. It attaches to the surface and in between the teeth. It can also collect beneath the gum line. When this happens, the gums become inflamed. This is called periodontal disease.

People who do not have well controlled diabetes are at risk for periodontal disease. Eventually, the gum disease becomes so bad that they lose their teeth.

Here are some signs of periodontal disease. If you have any of these signs then see a dentist as soon as possible.

gums that bleed easilyred swollen and painful gumsbad breathbad tastepus in between teeth or when the gums are pressedgums that have been pulled away from the teeth

Diabetes can also cause fungal infections

The mouth naturally has thousands of species of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The good thing is that the bodies natural defense system keeps them all in check so that they do not cause any problems.

Oral thrush is a fungal infection that can occur in people with type 2 diabetes.

There are several reasons why you can get fungal infections:

Wearing denturesCigarette smokingHyperglycemiaAntibioticsDry mouth

How to reduce dental problems

Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush. You can also use a electric toothbrush.Floss between your teeth at least once a dayChange your toothbrush at least every 3 monthsDisinfect your toothbrush regularly. You can place it in a microwave or a dishwasher.Use an antimicrobial mouthwashUse a toothpaste that has fluorideWatch for any signs of dental problems and tell your dentistQuit smokingDrink water regularly to keep the mouth moistA dash of 100% peppermint essential oil in water is a great natural breath freshener.

See your dentist regularly

Schedule an appointment twice a year to see your dentist. If you have any sores or pain in your mouth be sure to let your dentist know.Let your dentist know if your blood sugars levels are out of control. Also let your dentist know if there is any change in your medical history.Do not take any oral medications that could lower your blood sugar before seeing the dentist. If you are going to have dental work done and you are taking a blood thinner, be sure to let your dentist know this. The dentist will probably want to get a medical clearance from your primary healthcare provider.

So take the time to make sure that you pay attention to the health of your mouth. That way you will not go through the pain from lost teeth.

Let's face it dental care to replace lost teeth can be very costly. So why not invest in prevention and not a cure?

Take an active role to improve your oral health and diabetes.

The Importance of a Healthy Diabetes Diet

When a person is 1st diagnosed with diabetes, diet regime becomes an important part of these lives. This is why a lot of diabetics visit which has a dietician when they acquire diagnosed with diabetes. Even however medications and insulin are available, diet is nonetheless an important thing to concentrate on as a diabetic.

For all those with diabetes, diet needs to be carefully resolved and sometimes changed completely from the diet the individual experienced before they were clinically determined to have the disease. The biggest factor to avoid is enhanced sugar, such as sometimes appears in things like desserts, donuts, chocolate along with cookies. Refined sugar sparks the release of insulin shots and results in the highest blood vessels sugars when swallowed and is not recommended for diabetic patients.

The diabetes diet plan should contain numerous small meals during the course of the day. This amounts out the blood sugar levels and is the healthiest method for diabetics to keep secure blood sugar levels throughout the day. None in the meals should be very large or should have lots of refined sugar inside them.

Protein should be most of the diabetes eating habits. Protein can be in the form of meat, beans or peanut butter. Protein does not trigger blood sugar boosts very much and should be part of several of the small dishes a diabetic consumes every day. If the diabetic chooses meats, zero fat cuts of various meats should be chosen.

Diabetes mellitus diets should also think about issues around fats and triglycerides. Diabetics have above average triglyceride counts thus a low fat diet regime would benefit the diabetic person. Fats can be found in things like butter, inside processed foods and in several baked goods. Eating a decreased fat diet can also affect the diabetic’s weight. Weight loss can really improve the wellbeing of any diabetic.

Complicated carbohydrates are flawlessly acceptable in the diabetic issues diet. Complex carbohydrates involve things like rice, flour, barley and also other grains. These types of carbohydrate food are processed more slowly than are sophisticated sugars. They place less negative feelings on the pancreas when it comes to releasing insulin.

Fresh fruits and fresh vegetables must be on every good diabetes diet. These usually are lower in calories, free of fat and made from complex carbohydrates. Fruits contain the sugars, fructose, which is easier on our bodies and doesn’t trigger the release of insulin just as much as does glucose along with sucrose, or table sugar.

Each time a diabetic first will begin a diabetes diet plan, they should write down every little thing they eat and should check their body sugars before and after meals. This gives the new diabetic the chance to see how different factors of their diet can affect the blood sugar levels. Writing almost everything down doesn’t have to be a normal thing but is nice in the beginning or when the treatment changes.

Diet-controlled, common medication and insulin-dependent diabetics should all follow the all forms of diabetes diet. While the diet is not intended to have anybody lose weight, any fat loss on the diabetic diet regime will improve the greatest outcome of the diabetic person. In some cases, losses of large amounts of weight leads to needing lesser numbers of medication or possibly inside needing no treatment at all.

Diabetes Food List - Healthy Eating for Type 2 Diabetes

What is a diabetes food list?

Being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes is a life-changing event. One of the main challenges is making changes in your diet.

One of the first questions that almost every patient diagnosed with type 2 diabetes asks is "What am I supposed to eat now?"

What you eat is a very important part of maintaining blood sugars in the target range. If a type 2 diabetic has no idea what to eat, being able to control blood sugar levels will be near impossible.

The goal in treating type 2 diabetes successfully is to make lifestyle changes.

My strategy when explaining diet is to keep it simple.

Your mindset should be one of adapting changes that enhance your lifestyle. Find something that works well for you.

There are a lot of websites out there on the Internet touting one diet or another. Some even speak about being able to "reverse type 2 diabetes."

Recently, the American Diabetes Association made some changes that make it easier for a newly diagnosed diabetic to get into action.

Do diabetes food lists really work?

In the past there was a lot of talk about 'diabetes food lists'. Diabetes food lists were thought of as restrictive. It's not likely that a patient is going to follow such a diet for a long time.

The fact is that the foods on a diabetes food list will work for anyone who is committed to a healthy lifestyle.

A diabetes food list helps people living with diabetes understand foods that help maintain the blood sugars within the target range. They will also help to reduce hyperglycemia.

There is a ton of information out there about what makes up a diabetes food list. It's OK to follow these. But I recommend just using them as a guideline that will help you to adapt healthy food choices.

Here are some of the current recommendations on how to eat healthy while living with type 2 diabetes:

Create your plate

The American Diabetes Association recently did away with the diabetes food pyramid and adapted the "create your plate." This is a strategy that makes it less overwhelming for someone just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes to get straight into action planning healthy meals.

So here are the steps to create a plate:

Take a standard sized dinner plate.Divide it into three sections. Start by dividing in half. Then divide one of the halves in two. There you have three sections. Since it is divided into three sections, one section will be larger. On the larger section of the plate, place you non-starchy vegetables such as broccoli, greens, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes etc.On one of the smaller sections, place your starchy foods like rice (preferably brown rice), grains, corn, pasta, beans etc.On the other small section place a serving of meat or a meat substitute such as turkey, chicken, fish etc.On the side you may add an 8 oz. serving of milk. Or if you are lactose intolerant like a number of adults are, you can have some almond, soy or coconut milk. Water also works just fine. Then a small serving of fruit. Preferably fresh fruit.

You have created your plate

Carbohydrate Counting

One of the important strategies for a person living with type 2 diabetes is to know the amount of sugars they are eating. This will help to reduce the complication of hyperglycemia.

Up till the mid 1990s, carbohydrates were touted as being bad for anyone with diabetes. Now we know that to not entirely be the case. Naturally everything, including carbohydrates, must be eaten in moderation.

A great tool is carbohydrate counting or "carb counting" as it is popularly called.

The strategy is to round up the total amount of carbohydrates that you are allowed in a day. And divide this equally among your meals - including snacks.

One of the advantages of carbohydrate counting is that it reduces the tendency for the blood sugar levels to fluctuate. This helps to prevent huge swings in insulin levels that could lead to fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

If you plan to use carbohydrate counting exclusively, then you may need the assistance of a nutritionist. They will help to customize a meal plan for you.

A good place to start is between 45-60 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Remember that carbohydrates are in starchy foods like breads, grains and pasta. They are also in fruits and vegetables, milk products.

Reading food labels makes it easier to measure how much carbohydrates you are getting in a meal.

What are Diabetes Super Foods?

The American Diabetes Association has a list of ten super foods that it recommends. I love the way that certain foods get tagged as "super foods."

Just as I like to point out, these "super foods" should be a part of the diet of anyone looking to live healthy.

The added benefit for a diabetic is that these foods help to give extra nutrients and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. In addition they also contain powerful antioxidants.

These super foods help to not only control blood sugar levels. But also maintain the health of the cell membranes.

So here are the top ten super foods that everyone should be eating:

Berries of all kinds (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries etc.)Dark leafy vegetables- such as spinach, kale and asparagusBeans- all varieties. Beans are high in fiber and low in glycemic indexFish particularly fish that is rich in omega 3 sources such as salmon, herring, sardinesFat free milk & yoghurtNutsTomatoesSweet potatoesWhole grains that have not been processedCitrus fruits

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the healthy ways to eat as a diabetic.

It is my hope that this article will answer the question, 'What am I supposed to eat?'

How to Establish a Fun and Healthy Diabetes Diet

A diabetic diet is a healthy diet that everyone needs daily and something that can be fun to plan out instead of being dreaded. It is common misconception that once a person is diabetic they are compelled to be on a strict complicated diet regimen of eating special foods. A diabetic diet is more centered towards establishing a more healthy diet that is aimed to control the blood sugar level of a diabetic person.

It would be most appropriate to have diabetes diagnosed by a competent doctor who will most likely refer their diabetic patients to a licensed dietitian who will help a diabetic person plan out their diabetic diet.

The diabetic diet needed by diabetic individuals is mainly centered towards planning a healthy nutrition intake that will help promote a normal blood sugar level in the body. There are certain nutrition guidelines that are needed for a diabetic diet and a dietitian can certainly help an individual plan out a good diet plan based to the food preferences of the person and their lifestyle.

A diabetic diet is always a part of the treatment program for diabetic persons. Health practitioners always emphasize the need of vegetables, whole grains and fruits to be a part of a person’s diabetic diet.

One does not need to go through a restrictive diet but rather observe to eat healthy foods that are low in calories and fats and are naturally rich in vitamins and nutrients. In fact this diet is considered to be ideal for everyone even for non-diabetic individuals.

When planning for a healthy diabetic diet there are three major things to keep in mind. First is to eat foods rich in starches of at least six servings daily. Breads, starchy vegetables and cereals are example of starchy foods that can maintain the blood sugar level needed daily by the body.

Second is to eat vegetables and fruits everyday since these groups of foods are rich in fiber that helps reduce the glucose absorption from the intestine. This would mean preventing immediate deprivation of the body from sugar which is broken down to glucose and to be absorbed by the intestines.

Third will be eating sweet foods and sugars in moderation where the recommended intake of these will be once or twice a week the most when included in a diabetic diet.

As part of a diabetic diet, fatty foods and foods high in calories must be avoided. For a diabetic diet to be more highly effective it must be complemented with a healthy lifestyle and exercise.

When trying to keep on a consistent diabetic diet there are ways to keep a diabetic person better learn how to cope with their diet more palatably by learning to alternate the kind of fruits on their diet according to the season when it is available.

Eating fresh fruits are better than preserved ones and one fun way of loving your diabetic diet would be to try planting your favorite fruits and vegetables on your own backyard. A diabetic diet is not something to be dreaded. It is in fact a healthy diet that everyone regularly needs.

Article by Lorine Tiffee

The bad news for people looking for magical diabetes diets to control his or her condition is that they do not really exist. Of course there are diet plans that will diabetics can follow to control their weight as well as blood sugar, but these are nutritionally very similar to the diet that any person should comply with to remain healthy. The real difference is that diabetes diets are necessary to control an ailment that can prove lethal, whereas a similar diet for a non suffering from diabetes is only intended to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

: The purpose of diabetes eating plans

Diabetes diets, or even meal plans designed specifically with diabetics in mind, have four major aims. The first could well be to maintain a healthy weight, which makes diabetes better to control. Two other aims of diabetes diet plans are to limit the consumption of saturated fat, and raise the intake of substantial fibre foods. A final goal of diabetes diets is to integrate foods with a lower glycaemic index.

- Diabetes mellitus diets help to have a healthy weight

Preserving a healthy weight is vital for diabetics to overweight makes blood sugar much harder to manage. This is because excess fat, specially around the waist, can make it hard for the physique to use insulin efficiently. Reducing their weight to some healthy level may benefit diabetics in different ways too. It can reduce their own risk of heart disease, improve their mobility, reduce problems for their joints, relieve stress and exhaustion and build up his or her confidence.

- Fats intake is limited in diabetes diets

Saturated fat is the main nutritional cause of high blood cholesterol, and diabetics need to ensure their diet regime does not include excessive saturated fat or their own health will not be able to use insulin efficiently. The main sources of saturated fats are dog, and some plant products.

- Saturated-fat containing pet products to avoid contain:

o Beef and beef excess fat

o Veal lamb and pork

o Lard

o Poultry fat

o Cream, milk, butter and parmesan cheese

- Saturated-fat containing plant products to avoid incorporate:

o Coconut and coconut essential oil

o Palm oil and the company kernel oil

o Cocoa butter

- Diabetes mellitus diets are full of fibre

Diabetics includes high fibre meals in their diets. These types of food release sugar more slowly into the system, making blood sugar levels easier to control. The amount of fiber in foods such as cereals often will depend on very much on how significantly the food has been highly processed. Fibre, as well as minerals and vitamins are lost in the event the outer layer of the materials is stripped apart, so as a rule organic foods are a healthier, higher fibre choice.

- The following food are all good reasons for dietary fibre to get included in diabetes diet programs:

o Wholemeal and granary breads

o Wholemeal flour

o Wholegrain breakfast cereals such as bran flakes

o Wholemeal noodles and brown almond

o Fresh fruit and vegetables, especially when skin are eaten at the same time

o Potatoes cooked in their themes

o Nuts and seeds

o Beans, peas and lentils

- Minimal glycaemic index foods ought to form part of all forms of diabetes diets

The fourth goal of diabetes diets is to consume foods that have the lowest glycaemic index. Generally people who eat foods having a low glycaemic index possess lower total body fat levels, and these meals have a reduced impact on blood sugar levels so they help make diabetes easier to handle. The types of foods using a low glycaemic index contain fruits, vegetables, cereals and legumes.

Even though it helps to know the original glycaemic index of food, diabetics should be aware there are many factors that will alter this amount. These factors include:

o How the meals was prepared

o Other food items that are eaten as well

o Additional components of the food for instance fat or proteins

o How each individual’s body acts to the food

If you want to know more about planning your diabetes diet plans around the glycaemic index, question your doctor to refer you to a dietitian, who will be capable of help you put together a personal meal plan to suit your personal needs
